The Wilderness Volume
£12.00
What is wilderness? Maybe it's the raw, untameable nature found in rugged expanses of remote regions, or sprawling landscapes abundant in wildlife and unhindered by man-made intrusions. It may be our cabins in the woods, or even found within the confines of our back gardens. Or perhaps it is something much deeper: that exhilarating and intangible sense of being unbound from our modern constructs, tied instead to our environment and at the mercy of the natural world.
This volume reflects on how perceptions of wilderness evolve and change – how wilderness has been feared, conquered, and revered. It contemplates how we may embrace our wilder selves and become more in tune with nature. It discovers how creativity and collective vision can create positive change, and how wildlands can inspire and enliven us. It explores spaces shared with other species, and thinks about how we may offer environmental stewardship and protect our last remaining wild places.

Questioning how untouched our wild places really are • Mule packing into the wilderness • Cabin building • Reconnecting with our innate sensibilities and wild tendencies • One of the most ambitious rewilding projects in Europe • Combining conservation and creativity • The concept of wilderness as a refuge in an increasingly human-dominated world • The bosky landscapes of Romania’s Carpathian Mountains • How time in nature can shape one's worldview
The Wilderness Volume content ranges from stories about a cabin builder in the Pacific Northwest, to a digital nomad favouring the forest over bricks and mortar, to mule packing into the wilderness of Montana, to a printmaker who draws inspiration from her woodland surrounds and her deep connection to nature to create work. We have an essay about the problems and necessities of separating humans from wilderness, an article about authentic ways to reconnect with our innate sensibilities and feel inherently more wild, and a long read that investigates just how untouched our wild places actually are and how palaeoecology holds the key to finding out. Our travel section is focussed on the the wilds of Romania and the country’s ancient forests that teem with wildlife and sprawl over the mountainous terrain of the Carpathian Mountains. This incredible wilderness stronghold and its unique dynamic with human activity is a rarity for our heavily developed continent, and it is because of this that we wanted to share and celebrate some of the amazing stories of passion, preservation and conservation from this wild and bosky country. To create them, we teamed up with the Association of Ecotourism in Romania (AER), an organisation doing groundbreaking work to bring together the public and the private sector in a partnership for nature conservation and sustainable tourism development in Romania.

We are continually evaluating our processes and looking to learn more in an effort to be kinder to our planet. We admit we aren’t perfect, but here’s a little insight into some of the ways we try to minimise our impact.
Our printing and production are done by Park Communications, London, who are committed to minimising their environmental impact, and won Environmental Printer of the Year Award at the PrintWeek Awards 2017, and were a finalist for the award in 2018. With them, Another Escape prints in vegetable-based inks on FSC and EU Eco-label paper, and all printing plates used in magazine’s production are recycled after use, and all waste is disposed of responsibly.
In contrast to much of the publishing industry, we attempt to calculate the true number of copies we will actually sell, and we print only that amount. We don’t want unread magazines going to waste; we want them in the hands of readers who will enjoy them. To do this, we work closely with regional distributors and operate in-house distribution solutions, working directly with stockists to reduce waste as much as possible. When working directly with stockists, we ensure that carbon-neutral couriers are used.
The longevity of our product is important to us. Another Escape is created to be timeless with in-depth content and high-quality production. It isn’t a throw-away magazine, it’s a publication to be kept, cherished and shared. When you are finally finished with your copy, we encourage you to share it with others or recycle it.
